The KDP review process feels slow and mysterious. Here's exactly what's happening, how long it takes, what can go wrong, and what to do if it does.

You hit "Save and Publish." Instantly, your book enters the KDP review queue. No delay here.
Duration: 5-30 minutes
KDP's automated systems scan your file for obvious issues: corruption, missing fonts, blocked tags, copyright mismatches. If it fails here, you get an error immediately.
Duration: Usually 12-48 hours (but can be up to 5 business days)
Your book joins the human review queue. During business hours (US time), this is often faster. Weekends and holidays slow things down.
Duration: Minutes to hours
A KDP reviewer checks your interior and/or cover against KDP's publishing guidelines. They verify margins, fonts, image quality, copyright page, metadata, etc.

KDP emails you with approval or rejection. Approval usually takes 24-72 hours total. Rejection includes a reason.

KDP's error messages are vague, but they point to a real issue. Common reasons:

Truth: Rejection ≠ ban. You can resubmit unlimited times. Only books with genuine KDP violations get removed after approval.
